Bringing Baby Home: The Essentials

Here’s a list of “must-haves” for when you bring the new baby home.

bullet

Sleeping Options – A cradle and bassinet are wonderful for the new baby.  If you get one on wheels, then you can easily have your newborn with you at all times.  However, these smaller sleeping beds for baby will really only last for a few months.  After that, you will find that your growing baby must have a crib in order to sleep safely and comfortably.

bullet

The Right Crib -- Never scrimp on the really critical things you will need like a car seat and crib.  Compare some name-brand, sturdy models and look to make certain that the one you choose meets the very latest safety standards and that the slats are positioned no more than 2 3/8 inches apart.  This is very important.  Also, try out the crib numerous times, testing how  easy it is for you to raise and lower the sides.  Before baby is born, you will care more about the look of the crib, but ease-of-use will become more important after baby arrives.  You will be lifting baby and changing the fitted sheet more frequently than you can imagine, so invest in a crib that functions well.

bullet

Don’t Forget the Mattress – Just like a bed, most cribs do not come with a mattress.  Pick at least a middle price range and make certain that it meets all of the fire-retardant codes and regulations.  Remember, for baby’s safety, you want the mattress more firm than soft.

bullet

Changing Table – We recommend a changing table with storage for diapers, wipes, burps and room for other supplies.  A changing table with sides (but don’t ever leave baby unattended) is also important.  Make sure that your changing table choice comes with an opening at the bottom for your feet – otherwise, you could develop back problems.

bullet

Car Seats – Investing in a name-brand car seat is a must.  Check online to see about recent recalls and ask around to find out about the easiest models to install in your car.  If you will be using two vehicles, then you may want a back-up car seat.  They are usually a hassle to install, so once it is in the car you don’t want to take it out!  Practice installing it before baby comes home.

bullet

Music, Sweet Music – You will need a CD or even an old tape player for lullaby tunes.  It doesn’t have to be an expensive system, but it should be portable and easy-to-operate for those middle of the night feedings.

bullet

Clothing and Layette – Have plenty of diapers on hand (triple the amount you think you will need for the first month) and at least a dozen little sleepers.  You will also need a large stack of burp cloths, baby wash cloths and a variety of blankets.  Some liquid proof protectors for the crib or using in your lap also is a good idea.  Make sure that you wash all baby items before your delivery.

bullet

Bath and Baby Care -- Put together some baby bath essentials and anything else that your pediatrician recommends.  In fact, your pediatrician may have a handy list that will help you stock up on any baby care items that will be necessary.

bullet

Baby Monitor – While some would not call a baby monitor an essential item, we think it is – if only for a new parent’s peace of mind.  Monitors have improved so much in recent years and they are not a huge investment.

bullet

Bouncy Bouncy – A basic baby bouncer can be a life-saver as it frees up hands and allows parents to have baby in a portable carrier that they can take from room to room.  You don’t have to have one that plays music and has all the other bells and whistles.  A standard model will do.

bullet

Sling it Baby – Many parents love to have their newborns close to them in a body sling.  Try the sling out ahead of time so you know the basics of how it works.

bullet

Lights, Camera, Action! -- Get your camera and video ready beforehand.  If you use a camera with film, then buy lots of rolls ahead of time and find out where you can send in the film for developing.  If you are using a digital camera, then you will need to find a place that allows you to download, edit and order online.  The same applies to your video, we suggest buying lots of tapes ahead of time.

bullet

Baby Books -- Make sure that you have a few good parenting books.  The pregnancy books usually don’t have much information about caring for a newborn, so you will want a few resource books devoted just for baby.

bullet

Comfort for Mom – Shop for some comfortable clothes that are appropriate for nursing.  You won’t be able to fit into your pre-pregnancy wardrobe for some months and you will probably only care about comfort at this stage.  Lounging pajamas and sweats are a good choice, as are dresses and robes.  Think comfort first.

bullet

Nursing Accessories – Some new moms find nursing pillows to be very effective.  You might see if you could borrow one from a friend or relative and trying it out before making the investment.
