Selecting the right baby gift
used to be easy. There were the standard soft colors of pink, blue or
yellow and the gift choices revolved around useful items like blankets,
sleepers and diaper bags. Bigger ticket items such as strollers and
playpens all looked pretty much the same and selection was limited. Toys
were mostly geared toward older kids while children’s books were the same
old standards.By the late 1980s things began to
change in a big way. Like a sleeping giant, the baby gift industry came
alive with new gadgets, improved designs and bright eye-catching colors.
Sure you could still find baby clothes in traditional
pastels, but stores like Gymboree with their array of bold colors and
designs had become the fashion rage. New technology started cropping up
in toys and games, and soon everyone was talking about learning tools and
early childhood education. >From their end, manufacturers started
branding their baby products with more distinctive looks as they found the
market would support a wide range of goods from affordable to high-end
luxury.
Consumers gobbled up the new selections and the industry
scrambled to provide even more choices.
In fact, today there are so many choices that some –
especially those who are not in the “baby mode” -- are finding it
overwhelming. Sheila, a friend of mine, who has grown children went
shopping recently for a baby shower present and was amazed at the number
of products now available.
“The selection of baby gifts was simply amazing,” Sheila
said. “There were all of the traditional items, but then so much more. I
had a hard time deciding on what would be an appropriate gift – something
that would be practical, yet also appeal to the parents’ taste. It was
certainly more challenging than I anticipated.”
