Father’s Day may not be as widely celebrated around the
world as is Mother’s Day, but at least 25 nations observe a day to honor
fathers.
In the United States, dads are honored on the third Sunday in June.
Canada, Argentina, Mexico, Japan, France, England and more than twenty
other countries celebrate on that same day.
However, according to
the website Wikipedia, Father’s Day in Italy, Spain, Portugal and Belgium,
is marked on Saint Joseph’s Day, March 19th. Brazil honors its
fathers the second Sunday in August, while Australia celebrates Father’s
Day on the first Sunday in September.
The concept of Father’s
Day only became common in India within the last decade or two, and it is
still mainly celebrated in larger cities. A child will give his or her
papa a small gift, while many schools and cultural societies throughout
India host events or programs that showcase fatherhood.
February 23 is called
“Defender of the Fatherland Day” in Russia. On this day, there are
parades and processions in honor of military veterans, and women often
give the men in their lives a gift to mark the day.
